This unit was built for a group of 7th graders whose reading levels were mostly far above grade level or far below grade level. During this unit, we were studying Medieval China, Japan, and Korea (HSS-7.3, HSS-7.5).
In order to challenge all students while also meeting all students needs, we had two text studies running simultaneously: One on the Chinese classic by 14th-century Lue Guanzhong, Three Kingdoms; the other on A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park, a contemporary text that follows a boy living in 12th-century Korea.
Three of the documents linked below are the student materials provided during this literature study. The last document is my planning document for the entire unit, including history and writing lessons, notes from meetings with my ed specialist about how to support students, and complete lesson plans. While some may find this useful, it is published here with the caveat that it is a brainstorming and planning document, and is not in polished form.
